Setting up Shop
We have tarped off an area for building our Sonex.
We built some work tables; a fun family project. The kids are liking power tools.
Yes, everyone still has all of their fingers!

We had a full weekend attending the Sonex Builder’s Workshop. The kids didn’t attend the workshop, they went to a Brewer’s Game in Milwaukee instead!!
We learned a lot at the workshop. Karla worked on the hands-on project. She now has a much better understanding of what’s involved with building your own plane. Basic sheet metal skills, some mechanical aptitude and plenty of patience!

The History and Background information was well presented. We enjoyed hearing John’s thoughts concerning the design process and progression. The simplicity of the project was made apparent by the end of the workshop. (Karla thinks simplicity is a relative term)

It was neat to see the Monex and one of the original Sonerais. We were so busy soaking up all the information presented that we neglected to take very many pictures.
We tried to take pictures of the awesome fly-bys done by Kerry, Drew and Jeremy, but we found it difficult to take pictures and watch the flying at the same time!
There was a lot to ingest over the two days. We took many notes. We left Oshkosh feeling like we really could build this plane. The workshop was well worth it!
SO, here’s the plug for the workshop:
If you have any inclination to build your own plane, this is THE workshop to attend.
Here’s a couple more pictures of the workshop:

Many thanks to the folks at Sonex for putting on this workshop to ensure success for home builders of the Sonex family of aircraft.
Rec’d FAA confirmation of our N Number reservation: N103SX.
Began the tedious task of locating hardware and going through the plans to ensure that either Wicks or Aircraft Spruce’s hardware lists are complete to Eric’s expectations.
We have received the plans – # 1059 – for building our Sonex and are very excited!

There are A LOT of pages, overwhelming at first, but the more we read the more clear it all becomes.
We are attending the Sonex Builder’s Workshop this weekend in Oshkosh. This should help clear up any questions we have or maybe just cause us to ask more. We will give another update as soon as we have more to share!
